People who inspire us: Bren Smith
Bren Smith, founder of GreenWave, was first an industrial fisherman and an ocean farmer.
Driven by his love to the sea, he dropped out of school at 14 to join the fishing community in Newfoundland, Canada.
But soon enough, around the crash of the cod’s stock in 1994, reality struck in and Bren realized that if he wanted to spend his life on water, sustainability needs to be prioritized.
And so, he now finds himself in the world of aquaculture.
The 3-dimensional marine farming model that GreenWave works with, harvests kelp on a line near the ocean surface, accompanied by meshes of scallops and beads of mussels. This method requires zero inputs and provides a sustainable way to feed us.
In Bren’s words, “by eating like a fish, which finds all the wonderful nutrients we need in nature rather than creating them, we can be healthy…take care of our oceans and preserve them.”
This vision is one that Kelp Blue shares and supports.
