Among the many environmental benefits of kelp farming…
Kelp enhances marine biodiversity.
A two-year-long study carried out on Sweden’s west coast tracked the effects of a two-hectare sugar kelp farm to analyze its impact on species abundance.
The study: Researchers compared the kelp-farmed location against other four un-farmed locations around the same area.
The results: Even though all five areas had the same sediment profiles and coastal depths, the kelp farm attracted higher numbers of sea urchins, brittle stars, horseshoe worms, gastropods and amphipods than the other four un-farmed locations.
The takeaway message: Besides from demonstrating once again how fantastic kelp is, it goes to show that its cultivation has no negative effects on marine biodiversity. In fact, it enriches it.
