Seaweed farming can play a major role in improving livelihoods and increasing job opportunities for coastal communities.
Seaweeds are fast growing, easy to culture and command high market prices, all while having low production costs.
These factors make seaweed cultivation an attractive source of jobs for nearby coastal households. In fact, compared to small scale fishing, engaging in seaweed farming operations could generate higher incomes whilst relieving over-exploitation of fishery resources.
The benefits of seaweed cultivation are enhanced when farming at scale.
Scaling production, strengthening the value chains and researching local seaweed environments are some of the operations needed to farm at scale. All of this requires more human power.
