Biostimulants: Helping the Skin of the Earth
They say that soil is the “skin of the earth”. If so, our planet’s “skin” is in trouble. Here are a few scary statistics on soil degradation (FAO 2019):
🌱 The USA has lost 50% of its topsoil
🌱 52% of the world’s agricultural soil has already degraded
🌱 In Europe 75-85% of soil has less than 2% organic content
🌱 62% of India’s soil has less that 0.5% organic content (NB minimum should be 3-6%)
UNFAO warns us that if we do not focus on soil health now by 2050:
🪴 Crop yields could fall 50% in certain regions due to climate change and soil extinction
🪴 50% of agricultural land in Latin America and the Caribbean could become desert
🪴 Food and water scarcity could force over 1 billion people to leave their homes and migrate
So, how can kelp help?
Kelp-based biostimulants can help reduce our excessive dependence of synthetic fertilizers. Chemical fertiliser overuse contributes to soil acidification and soil crust, thereby reducing the content of organic matter, humus content and beneficial species. Seaweed-based biostimulants, like our StimPlus+, improve soil composition and stimulate plant growth so they can contribute significantly to environmental preservation. They are natural substances that can be applied to seeds, plants, and soils. They are also used as organic soil amendment products as they improve soil microbial activity, organic matter and uptake of nutrients.
We’re in the process of conducting field trials on a multitude of crops. We’ve also tested our StimPlus+ together with other leading biotimulants and have had incredibly encouraging results.
