Kelp Blue at Seagriculture Conference EU 2022
On 30th June, the Seagriculture Conference took place in Bremerhaven, Germany. Okke – our plant manager, and Ferdi – our project engineer, presented how Kelp Blue measures to what degree we are “rewilding the oceans” and involving and engaging members of the local community in Lüderitz and beyond.
The Seagriculture Conference gathers top seaweed specialists to share their knowledge about seaweed’s utilisation in many products like agricultural feed and offshore cultivation.
Ferdi and Okke presented the positive social and environmental impacts of planting Giant Kelp in Lüderitz, Namibia, on a local and global scale. They talked about investments in local employment, education, and ocean awareness and why planting giant kelp (Macrocystis Pyrifera) has the potential to create an impact worldwide. The biodiversity boost in the Benguela current is just one example of the way in which Kelp Blue can reduce the harm of climate change.
Attendees from 27 countries gathered together in this leading conference for the Seaweed industry. Other speakers at the conference included:
• David Mackie – Founder and Director – Marine Biopolymers Ltd, UK
• Paul Dobbins – Senior Director Impact Investing – World Wildlife Fund, USA
• Urd Grandorf Bak, PhD – Research and Innovation Manager – Ocean Rainforest, FO
• Alexander Ebbing – Research specialist – Hortimare, NL
