Using kelp to accelerate the shift to sustainability
The incredible potential of kelp as an Environmentally friendly input material is ready to be unlocked
WHAT WE DO
Kelp Blue Biotech is providing a viable long-term solution to various industries that historically rely on unsustainable inputs or extractive practices that leave a negative environmental impact by using the natural compounds found in cultivated kelp, especially giant kelp.
We strive to make a positive environmental impact on the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries by introducing a natural and ethical input material.
We exist to accelerate the shift to sustainability in multiple industries by using cultivated kelp.
We achieve this by employing a biorefinery, or zero waste model, where we use processing methods that use every component of the of the harvested material.
WHY KELP
- it is an extremely effective crop biostimulant (allowing farmers to drastically reduce the use of chemical fertilizers),
- it’s a fantastic input material for the plastic replacement industry. Alginates, which are only found in brown seaweed, are the cornerstone input for biodegradable films and packaging
- the fucoidans and fucoxanthins with their anti-oxidant and anti-cancerous properties make them an effective ingredient for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmecuitcal industry.,
- the lipids, proteins, sugars and the overall effect of the seaweed on animal gut health make it a perfect animal feed supplement.
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT ?
The existing kelp value chain is fragmented and inefficient at responding to fluctuations in supply and quality. Plus it’s generally not sustainable since much of the kelp used in leading products is harvested from wild kelp beds and forests.
Kelp Blue Biotech sources seaweed from our sister company Kelp Blue in Namibia. This allows us to have a fully integrated supply chain, from R&D, harvesting, processing to market development and sales, all with a guaranteed sustainable and steady supply.
While Kelp Blue Biotech is responsible for the processing, research and product improvements as well as sales and marketing, our sister company Kelp Blue Namibia ensures we have access to a large-scale steady supply of sustainably cultivated macrocystis– 120,000 tonnes of it per year.
Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with substantial numbers
These goals are at the core of our operations and provides the framework within which we promote prosperity and protect the environment.
