How seaweed biostimulants reduce fertiliser costs for barley

2024 was a wet year. Input costs went up. The returns on investment were lower than expected. More and more growers in the UK are looking for innovative alternatives to improve nutrient uptake, like StimBlue+. StimBlue+ minimises input costs for farmers and maximises economic returns. The numbers speak for themselves. One product gaining popularity among farmers is the seaweed biostimulant StimBlue+. Casper Velthuijs, an agronomist at Kelp Blue and a former farmer himself, shares why more and more farmers are turning to this innovative must-have.

Minimising input for barley: reduction in nitrogen fertilizer usage
A recent trial with an independent research organisation shows that StimBlue+ reduces the need for nitrogen fertiliser by enhancing the plant’s ability to absorb and utilise nutrients more efficiently. Our trials demonstrate that yields are maintained with a 30% reduction in fertiliser.

While higher yields boost financial returns, the greatest impact comes from lowering f ixed costs. Farmers using StimBlue+ can cut nitrogen fertilizer by up to 30% without sacrificing yield. This results in savings of £75 per hectare, with a cost of just £32 per hectare—using 2x 2 liters of StimBlue+ at £8 per liter.“With the wet year we’ve had, excessive rain can cause nutrient leaching—washing nutrients away before plants can absorb them, which impacts both yield and quality. StimBlue+ is made from Giant Kelp, a brown seaweed rich in bio-active compounds. Its polysaccharides, including alginates, enhance nutrient use efficiency, helping farmers get the most out of their inputs. By improving nutrient uptake, StimBlue+ supports resistant crops, even in challenging conditions”, Casper.

Proven innovation
Farmers need reliable, field-tested solutions they can trust. That’s why over £500,000 is invested annually in rigorous trials to ensure StimBlue+ delivers proven results. Fully compliant with EU safety, health, and environmental regulations, StimBlue+ carries the CE mark—giving you confidence in its quality and sustainability. With the barley growing season approaching, now is the perfect time to see how StimBlue+ can reduce your nitrogen fertilizer inputs on your barley crop. StimBlue+ application on barley (2 times 2 litres)
• First application: foliar spray at BBCH21 (beginning of tillering).
• Second application: foliar spray at the BBCH55 (pre-flowering).

*This approach ensures the plants receive support at critical growth stages. The results are based on StimBlue+ suggested application rates and calendars.
