Alaska
Alaska's clear, cold waters are perfect for cultivating giant kelp, and the state is poised to take a leadership in mariculture with its rich history and local knowledge.
In May 2024, Kelp Blue was approved for a 121-acre (around 50 hectares) giant kelp farm lease at Sea Otter Sound, near Prince of Wales Island, marking a significant milestone. Additionally, we applied for 150-acre and 200-acre licenses in April 2024 to establish a giant kelp farm at the Gulf of Esquibel.
Currently, we are developing our marine monitoring program and establishing hatchery operations in Craig on Prince of Wales Island. In the coming months, we will focus on starting operations, hiring, and developing our training programs. We are also fostering sales and logistics channels to support our new mariculture business.
Our operations will generate over 20 new full-time jobs in environmental monitoring, engineering, and kelp processing, along with dozens of indirect jobs, in our first year of operation.
